From 20 to 22 of March, in just 48 hours, 40,000 volunteers joined hands to find creative local solutions in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

The UN SDG Action Campaign — headquartered in Bonn — joined the highly motivated group of volunteers who spent their time and resources to take an active part in the #WirVsVirus Hackathon, a highly inspiring best practice example for collaboration in times of crises.

Estonia was the first country to organize a national hackathon (Hack the Crises!, 13.-15. March), quickly followed and amplified by the German edition organized by a strong team of organizations and the German government.

The German #WirVsVirus Hackathon in numbers:

  • 43,000 registered participants
  • 1,900 challenges handed in
  • 2,900 registered mentors
  • 1,500 submitted projects

“Now, more than ever, we need hope, we need solidarity, we need creative and transformative solutions to see this crisis through together. We would like to congratulate the German Government and everyone who participated in this initiative and are putting in place plans to amplify this effort.” — Marina Ponti, Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign

Only days ago, the Campaign launched the 2020 edition of the SDG Action Awards and is inviting everyone, everywhere to nominate or enter SDG actions that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and create transformative change for people and the planet.

Every year, the awards program honours inspiring, creative and transformative SDG Actions around the world that mobilize individuals or groups, inspire new behaviors or policies, or connect partners strengthening dialogue and trust for the Goals. This year, in response to the current COVID-19 health crisis, the Campaign has created a special Solidarity Award, to offer a stage to the most impactful and inspiring acts of solidarity and initiatives that create hope in these dire and uncertain times.

People and organisations everywhere are encouraged to submit their outstanding SDG Action and nominate to become one of the UN SDG Action Award winners until the 25th of May.
